Free Guided Public Hikes with John Muir Land Trust

Ready to (re)connect with nature? Join us for a series of free, guided hikes through stunning local landscapes. Our stewardship guides will lead you up, down and all around some of our favorite properties, pointing out fascinating flora, fauna, and geological wonders. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual nature lover, these hikes offer a perfect opportunity to unwind, exercise, and appreciate the beauty of the outdoors.

You do not need to register to participate in JMLT’s guided hikes. Just show up the morning of your scheduled hike with your hat, boots, and sense of wonder!

Harvey Ranch: Saturday, August 8

When: Saturday, Aug 8, 8am – 10am

Where: Saint Mary’s College, 1081 Christie Rd, Martinez, CA 94553

What to bring/wear: Refillable water bottle, sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, long sleeves). Dogs welcome on leash. Restrooms at main parking lot. No registration needed.

Fabulous Franklin Ridge: Saturday, August 8

Explore Franklin Ridge on this roughly 6-mile hike crosses three of the five properties JMLT has permanently protected along the ridge — each with its own history and ecosystem. Along the way, we’ll talk about the stewardship work underway now and the vision for connecting these landscapes in the future.

When: Saturday, Saturday, August 22, 8am – 12pm

Where: Meet at the Mount Wanda Trailhead parking lot

What to bring/wear: Refillable water bottle, sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, long sleeves). Dogs welcome on leash. 

Come prepared: No restrooms at the trailhead lot — nearest option is the gas station across from the John Muir National Historic Site. No registration needed.

Fall at Pacheco Marsh: Saturday, Sep 5 & Oct 17

Join us for an easy 2.5-mile walk to see how the summer’s heat and dry season transform this wetland — what’s blooming, what’s receding, and which birds are making themselves at home a full year after the marsh opened to the public.

The walk is flat and unhurried, with plenty of stops to look closely at plants and scan the water’s edge for wildlife. Come curious.

When: Saturday, Sep 5 and Oct 17, 8am-11am

Where: Meet at Pacheco Marsh, 2501 Waterfront Rd, Martinez, CA 94553

What to bring/wear: Comfortable clothing and shoes, hat, water, sunscreen.

Come prepared: There is no shade or running water on this walk. Dogs are not permitted on the marsh. Restrooms available at the main parking lot. No registration needed.
