Stewardship Ranger

POSITION DETAILS

  • Reports to: Stewardship Director
  • Status: Full-Time Exempt
  • Start Date: May 1, 2025
  • Location: Martinez, CA
  • Schedule: 5 days/week (some evenings & weekends as needed)
  • Compensation: $33-38/hour + full benefits + 5 weeks PTO

THE OPPORTUNITY

Under the supervision of the Stewardship Director, the Stewardship Ranger performs maintenance and resource protection tasks across JMLT properties and facilities. This position includes public contact; bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Land & Facility Maintenance

  • Perform grounds maintenance including mowing, irrigation system maintenance, and trail repairs
  • Construct and repair park infrastructure (fences, gates, signs, benches, etc.)
  • Remove non-native plant species and manage invasive plants
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides safely when necessary
  • Mitigate fire hazards by creating and maintaining fuel breaks
  • Operate and maintain various equipment (tractors, mowers, chainsaws, chippers)

Resource Protection & Visitor Services

  • Patrol parks and trails to check for hazards and monitor visitor activities
  • Educate visitors on rules and regulations
  • Assist with cattle grazing program and wildlife management
  • Respond to emergencies (medical, search and rescue, fires)
  • Clean and maintain visitor facilities including restrooms

Interpretive Functions

  • Create and conduct programs on natural and cultural history
  • Assist with special events and public engagement
  • Develop expertise in local cultural and natural history
  • Prepare interpretive materials for visitors

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (or equivalent combination of education/experience)
  • Three years of experience in landscape/facility maintenance, construction, or related field
  • Valid Class C California Driver’s License

Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience with landscaping equipment, power tools, and basic construction
  • Knowledge of horticulture, irrigation systems, and park maintenance techniques
  • Ability to lift/move up to 60 pounds and work in various weather conditions
  • Strong communication skills and customer service orientation
  • Ability to work independently and lead volunteer groups
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn internal systems

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • May require working unusual hours, weekends, and holidays
  • Outdoor work in various weather conditions
  • Must pass background check
  • Position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under CANRA
