Reports to: Chief Advancement Officer
Status: Full-time/Exempt
John Muir Land Trust (JMLT) protects and cares for open space, ranches, farms, parkland, and shoreline in the East Bay. With more than 4,000+ acres now permanently protected and cared for by JMLT, wildlife, habitat, and people thrive in the places that make the East Bay special.
The Opportunity: The Grants and Institutional Giving Manager will play a lead role in both securing and reporting on funding from public agencies, foundations, and corporations with goals aligned with organizational priorities for acquisition and restoration projects as well as stewardship and program needs. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, flexible, and highly gifted in the operational details of managing significant grant funds, from research and submission to reimbursement and reporting. The Manager will develop key relationships with funders, enhance and expand JMLT’s grants program, and secure annual corporate sponsorships. This individual will report to the Chief Advancement Officer and will collaborate with the development team as well as the Director of Stewardship, Associate Director of Family Harvest Farm, and Chief Financial Officer.
The position will primarily work remotely with in-office time as agreed upon.
Responsibilities:
- Enhance, integrate, manage, and expand the grants program, including calendars for submission and reporting timelines, and associated budgets; use Salesforce to support this schedule and tracking.
- Develop and manage an annual calendar of public agency, foundation, and corporate grant submittal deadlines
- Write and submit compelling grant proposals that speak to the urgency and need for support, aligning funder interests and JMLT priorities
- Write grant reports that communicate the outcomes of funder investment and strengthen JMLT’s reputation through clear accountability and outcomes
- Build and maintain relationships with key grant funders for details related to submission and reimbursement/management of grants
- Solicit corporate sponsorship of events and, as appropriate, programs
- Other duties as assigned related to securing and managing grants and sponsorships, and advancing JMLT’s mission and programs
Qualifications:
- A passion for conservation and environmental work; knowledge of land conservation or relatedareas
- Three to five years of experience in grants management
- Proven track record of writing and securing grants of $100,000 or more
- Strong acumen in developing grant proposal budgets and working with finance on grant reimbursement/reporting
- Integrity, warmth and collaborative mindset
- Skilled at working both independently and as part of a team
- Experience working in a small to medium size organization, working remotely or in hybrid setting, with flexibility, accountability, professionalism, and a sense of humor
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong computer skills – MS Office; donor databases (knowledge of Salesforce helpful)
- Bachelor’s degree
- Ability to work while hiking and walking on trails
- Ability to work some evening and weekends
