Enjoy a festive day at the National Park! There’s something for everyone. It’s free, open to the public and packed with activities for kids of all ages.

Join as we celebrate the addition of West Hills Farm to the John Muir National Historic Site and the much-anticipated public opening of beautiful Almond Ranch.

Listen as San Francisco Symphony musicians fill John Muir’s peach orchard with a morning concert. Start your afternoon of hiking at the John Muir National Historic Site, then explore the oak studded hills of Almond Ranch, the historic olive slopes of West Hills Farm, and the new Bay Area Ridge Trail connection.

Young conservatists and the young at heart will enjoy games, face painting, local wildlife, music, theatre, dance and free hot dogs, cake, and ice cream. Or pack your own picnic in John Muir’s historic pecan orchard among a festival atmosphere.

Feel like stepping back in time? Dress in period clothing as John Muir’s Victorian mansion comes to life. Meet the father of the National Park Service himself and hear reenacted stories. Tour John Muir’s family home and John Muir’s final resting place in the Alhambra Valley with the National Park Service.

There’s more to come as we continue to fill out our event schedule. You won’t want to miss this day!

The John Muir National Historic Site will expand through the donation of West Hills Farm from JMLT to NPS on the southern border of Mount Wanda. JMLT purchased this 44-acre historic farm adjacent to Mount Wanda. On June 25, 2018, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) announced that the 330-acre John Muir National Historic Site had officially been expanded with JMLT’s donation of the 44 acres of West Hills Farm.

Almond Ranch will open to the public on May 2, 2020. This stunning 281-acre property south of downtown Martinez and on the western border of Mount Wanda is the proverbial “missing piece” --- a place at the heart of the open space we have worked so hard together to protect. The ranch will expand a preserve of vital natural resources and establish a hub that connects major trails and adjacent landscapes for the very first time. John Muir Land Trust announced in December 2019 that it has raised the $4 million needed to acquire Almond Ranch and permanently preserve these 281 acres as public open space. Donations large and small from individuals across the region made the final difference. The Campaign To Save Almond Ranch was launched with a commitment of $1 million from the East Bay Regional Park District, $2 million from the California Wildlife Conservation Board and donations from thousands of individuals provided the final $1 million.
