Length: 4.45 miles

Bring: Plenty of water
Route: Begin at Rancho Laguna Park to the EBMUD Rocky Ridge Trail and along southern edge of Carr Ranch, up to high ridgelines and down into deep canyons

STRENUOUS HIKE

Led by JMLT Ranger Glen Lewis

Length: 7 miles
Estimated time: 3+ hours
Suited for: The most fit and experienced hikers
Bring: Plenty of water, snacks
Route: Begin at Rancho Laguna Park to the EBMUD Rocky Ridge Trail to Carr Ranch loop trail. Return to Rancho Laguna Park via Rocky Ridge Trail.

Description: This will be about a 7-mile hike with nearly 2,000 feet of climbing. Much of it is on open hills, so carry plenty of water. The first-half mile of the hike is flat, open grasslands. The next ¾ mile is mostly in a riparian area, but includes substantial climbing to the top of a ridge. There will be a turnaround point here, before descending into the Buckhorn Creek drainage area. Next we drop down about ¾ miles to Buckhorn Creek and join the Carr Ranch Loop. The trail follows the beautiful creek up about ¾ miles, where we turn north to climb into the hills of Carr Ranch. There will be a turnaround point here before significant climbing in the open hills. The trail follows the ridges of Carr Ranch, with expansive regional views, and crosses another drainage before dropping back down into Buckhorn Creek and completing the 3-mile loop. Finish this hike by following the Rocky Ridge Trail back to Rancho Laguna Park.
